Official Press Release

Screen Nova Scotia is pleased to officially announce the nominees for the 6th annual Screen Nova Scotia Awards Gala, which will take place virtually on Friday, December 4th, at 8PM. The awards recognize and celebrate the incredible talent, creativity, and passion that are the trademarks of Nova Scotia’s film, television and animation industry. The original in-person event was scheduled to take place in May, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Congratulations to every single individual who helped bring a project to life over the past year, and a special thanks to the filmmakers who have been nominated for this year’s awards gala,” said Laura Mackenzie, Executive Director, Screen Nova Scotia. “Your work shines a spotlight on our world-class community of creators and gives us something to be deeply proud of. Although we can’t be together to celebrate as a community this year, I hope you and 10 of yours will plan your own gathering, turn the sound up loud, and join us as we tune into the Screen Nova Scotia Awards Gala online. It’s more important now than ever that we take this time to celebrate your accomplishments.”

The individual video packages for each award category will go live on December 4th at 8PM on Screen Nova Scotia’s Vimeo page (HERE) and will also be shared on social media. The videos will be free to watch.

Notable awards include the ACTRA Awards for Outstanding Performances, the Film Crew Excellence Award, the Women in Film & Television Atlantic Award, and the Community Recognition Award, along with Screen Nova Scotia awards for best television, film, and animation.

“We’ve got serious talent here, and these nominations highlight some of the many compelling performances we’ve seen on screen over the last year,” said Matthew Lumley, Chair, ACTRA Maritimes Awards Committee. “The awards gala is a great way to recognize and celebrate the skill, dedication, and hard work of our entire film and television community.”

This year’s prestigious Industry Champion Award will be awarded posthumously to locations manager Shaun Clarke. Shaun worked as a locations manager, scout and actor for over 35 years and was a pillar in the screen industry and community. An ambassador for filming in Nova Scotia and a mentor for emerging filmmakers and crew, Shaun was always generous with his time and knowledge. A snapshot of Shaun’s credits include The Lighthouse, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Black Cop, The Healer, Trailer Park BoysMr. D, Call Me Fitz, and The Shipping News, along with many commercials and short films.

“With his natural charm and trademark wry smile, Shaun was often the first face visiting filmmakers would see when deciding whether to bring their projects to our province,” said Mike Volpe, Board Chair, Screen Nova Scotia. “While many times successful in helping land these big-budget productions, equally important to Shaun was lending his talents to emerging and established Nova Scotia filmmakers to help realize their creative visions. As an artist himself, Shaun passionately believed in artistic endeavour and the courage of those who dedicated themselves to that pursuit. Fuelled by this belief, Shaun helped build – and rebuild – the Nova Scotia film industry through his decades-long career and has left an indelible imprint on our film community, both personally and professionally.”
